David L. Zeigler

David L. Zeigler, 90, of Van Wert passed away at Van Wert Manor on Sunday, April 5, 2020.

He was born March 4, 1930, in York Township, Van Wert County, to the late John M. and Naomi (Wise) Zeigler.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Van Wert; son, Charles (Rachael) Zeigler of Fairfax, Virginia; a daughter, Gretchen (Mike) Barnett of New Haven, Indiana; a daughter-in-law, Molly (Weaver) Zeigler; a stepson, David Van Wynsberghe of Summerton, South Carolina; and two stepdaughters, Beth (Jack) Rollins, of Summerton, South Carolina, and Lisa (Lionel) Enyart of Van Wert. He is also survived by grandchildren Ian and Roman (Amanda) Barnhart of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and step grandchildren, Aaron (Jessica) Rollins of Sumter South Carolina, Kristin Rollins of Summerton, South Carolina; Elise (Adam) Hoaglin of Van Wert and Adelan Wermer of Fairfax, Virginia; twelve great-grandchildren; and the mother of his children, Carolyn Hey.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his son, John Zeigler; brothers, Richard and Robert Zeigler; and a sister, Marcile Hankins.

David was a 1948 graduate of Van Wert High School. He also graduated in 1952 from Northwestern University and was a member of the Class of 1956, the Ohio State Law School. He was admitted to the Ohio Sate Bar in 1957 and practiced law in Van Wert for over 40 years, four of which were as Prosecuting Attorney for Van Wert County. Travel, movies, tennis, swimming and snow skiing kept him active in his younger years. His main joy now has been spending time with family and being with the great grandchildren.

David was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church where he served on various boards and taught adult Sunday school. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. His community activities have included memberships in the YMCA, Van Wert Rotary Club (60 years), Van Wert County Historical Society where he has served as trustee and parliamentarian, Elks Lodge 1197, Van Wert Lodge #218 F. & A.M., American Legion Post #178 and the Wassenberg Art Center.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 5, 2020, at First United Methodist Church in Van Wert. Interment will follow at Van Wert Woodland Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the combined honor guard of the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars Posts of Van Wert.

Preferred memorials are to the Van Wert YMCA or First United Methodist Church.
