Walter D. Thompson, 90, of Van Wert, passed away at 2:08 a.m., Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at the Van Wert County Hospital. He was born on December 8, 1924, in Van Wert County, to the late Walter L. and Bessie M. (Miller) Thompson. He married Thelma (Gephart) Thompson on October 19, 1969, and she survives. He is also survived by a very close friend, Rob Sites of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Besides his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his sister, Hannah Carpenter. He attended Pleasant Elementary School and graduated from Van Wert High School in 1942. He was active in FFA and 4H during his high school days. He showed vegetables, fruits and steers at the Van Wert County Fair - receiving reserved grand champion for his steer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China, Burma, India Theater. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter #54. Walter retired from Sonoco (Continental Can Company) in 1984 with 37 ½ years of service and farmed for many years in Pleasant Township. He was a member of The Apostolic Church of Van Wert. His kind and compassionate spirit was a blessing and inspiration to all who knew him. He was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. He enjoyed traveling and was a tractor, steam engine and auto racing enthusiast. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 10, 2015, at The Apostolic Church with Pastor Robert Frake officiating. Interment will follow at Ohio City Woodlawn Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Harvey Lewis Post 346 of the American Legion. Calling hours are Friday 2 - 7 p.m., and Saturday one hour prior to the service all at The Apostolic Church on S. Shannon Street, Van Wert. Preferred memorials are to The Apostolic Church.
