Shirley Ann Counts, 76, of Van Wert, passed away at 8:32 a.m., Monday, at the VanCrest Health Care Center in Van Wert. She was born on May 24, 1936, in Haviland, the daughter of the late Ray R. and Ethel (Chapke) Speakman. She was married to Daniel J. McConahay on October 16, 1954. She later married Lee Ray Couts on January 6, 1979, and he preceded her in death on March 7, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kelly Brent McConahay. Family survivors include her step mother, Audrey E. Jacobs of Van Wert; three daughters, Kimberly & Bill Torok of Delta, OH, Kristine (Ted Baron) McConahay of Hudson, IN, and Kerry L. & Jeff Gudakunst of Grover Hill; a son, Kaury (Melinda) McConahay of Huntsville, TX; her daughter-in-law, Mickey McConahay of Ohio City; eleven grandchildren, Martin (Valerie) McConahay of Austin, TX, Casey S. McConahay of Van Wert, Shea Lyn (Nathan) Crass of Fort Mill, SC, Jason Torok and Nichole Torok of Delta, OH, Camron Whitacre of Dayton, Nathan (Charisse) McConahay of Hampton, VA, Courtney McConahay of O'Fallon, IL, Graden, Gabrielle and Gracie Gudakunst of Grover Hill; three step sons, Terry & Diana Couts of St. Marys, Bruce Couts of Van Wert and Larry Couts of Defiance, OH; a step-daughter, Linda (Darrel) McGee of Celina; a brother, Douglas R. Speakman of Fort Wayne, IN; a sister Karen S. Morris of Van Wert; three great grandchildren; and nine step grandchildren. Shirley was a 1954 graduate of Van Wert High School and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Van Wert. She had worked at the Times-Bulletin, Teleflex and Aeroquip and had been a long-time volunteer at the YMCA. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2013, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Van Wert Woodland Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday 2 - 8 p.m. Preferred memorials are to the First United Methodist Church or State of the Heart Hospice.
