Obituary

Robert Charles Stahl, 89, of rural Van Wert, died at 6:17 p.m., Sunday, at the Van Wert Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Ohio City on May 21, 1925, the son of the late Walter Leroy and Lois Edna (Reever) Stahl, Sr. One June 19, 1946, he married the former Dorthy Louise Sigler in St. Johns Lutheran Church in Ohio City and she survives in Van Wert. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Wayne Arthur and Walter L. Stahl, Jr.; and three sisters, Alma E. Wolfe, Margaret I. Dull and Rita Belle Ries. Mr. Stahl retired in 1984 as a school teacher in the Van Wert County school system. Previously he was with the Ohio Power Company as a first class lineman and as an industrial/commercial engineer. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and had served in various positions on the Church Council. Bob was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, having served 10 years in the United States Army Air Coprs, the Air Force Reserves, and the U.S. Air Force as a bombardier/navigator. He was a life member of Harvey Lewis Post #346, the American Legion for the last 65 years. Recently he transferred his membership to Isaac Van Wert Post 178, and he was a life member of Eicher DeCurtains Post 5713, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Also he was a life member of the Ohio Teachers Association. On two occasions he served as commander of the American Legion Post and as president of the Van Wert County Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of the Van Wert County Genealogy Society where he was a member of the First Families of Van wert County. He was also a past member of the Independent Order of Off Fellows, the Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio City, the Chapter and Council of Van Wert, and the Ancient and Accepted Valley of the Scottish Rite of Toledo where he became a 32nd Degree Mason. He served a three year tem on the Board of Directors of the PSA 3 of Lima. Most recently he was on the Board of Directors of the Van Wert County Council on aging for five years. He was also an avid amateur radio operator and was a member of the Van Wert county Amateur Radio Club. He was a member of the American Red Cross where he volunteered on the Disaster Teams and with the Van Wert County Hospital Volunteers for 21 years. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 16, 2014, at Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastors Steven G. Waterman and Josh Tissot officiating. Interment will follow at Ohio City Woodlawn Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the combined honor guard of the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours are Wednesday 5 - 7 p.m., and one hour prior to the services Thursday all at Wesley United Methodist Church. Preferred memorials are to the Wesley United Methodist Church or the Van Wert County Hospital.
