Robert Eugene Rickard, 90, of Van Wert, died at 5:23 p.m., Thursday at the CHP Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert. He was born December 11, 1922, near Ohio City, the son of the late Winfield and Mary Catherine (Mottinger) Rickard. On January 4, 1949, he married the former Ruth Kittle and she preceded him in death on May 1, 1972. Family survivors include two daughters, Diane (Bob) Carroll and Debbie (Tony) Krick all of Van Wert; one son, Robert Edward Rickard of Lima; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren. He was additionally preceded in death by a brother, Doyt Rickard and five sisters, Mabel Urton, Voyla Fleming, Cleo Kiracofe, Marcile Harris and Lela Mae Wendel. Bob was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from Continental Can Company (Greif Bros.) in Van Wert after 35 years of service. He was a life member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5803 and member of American Legion Post 178, both of Van Wert. He was an avid baseball and NASCAR fan. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home. Military rites will follow conducted by the combined honor guard of the V.F.W. and American Legion Posts of Van Wert. Burial will be in Ohio City Woodlawn Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the CHP Inpatient Hospice Center.
