Mary Evelyn Tierney, 91, of Van Wert passed away at 5:08 a.m., Monday, January 18, 2021 at Van Wert Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on March 2, 1929, in Van Wert, Ohio the daughter of the late Ray Bates, Sr. and Jennie E. (Potts) Bates. On January 28, 1950 she married James Arthur Tierney who passed away on June 6, 1993.

Survivors include her brother, Thomas (Barbara) Bates of Van Wert, along several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Paula Sanders of Van Wert.

Mary was preceded in death by her son, Michael Lynn Tierney; two brothers, Terry Lee Bates and Ray (Flo) Bates, Jr.; one sister, Helen Louise (Art) Censullo.

Mary worked at Bowmart Instruments and Planet Instruments, she also was a part-owner and manager of MJM Machining. Mary was a long time member of Maples United Methodist Church of Fort Wayne, a 1947 graduate of Van Wert High School and a 25 year member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 600 of Waynedale, Indiana.

Services will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Cowan & Son Funeral Home with W. Clark Williman officiating of Calvary Evangelical Church. Interment will follow services at Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Calling hours are noon until time of services on Wednesday.

Preferred memorials are to the Van Wert Manor Nursing Home Activity Fund.
