Louis James Ryan, 99, of Convoy, died at 9:25 a.m., Monday at the CHP Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on December 5, 1915, in Convoy, the son of the late Walter and Bessie (Baxter) Ryan. On June 14, 1941, he married the former Eileen Louise Weck who preceded him in death on November 28, 1998. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James J. Ryan. Family survivors include two sons, Jerry Ryan of Indianapolis and Kevin Ryan of Toledo; one daughter, Sharon (Tony) Van Hoozer of Carmel, Indiana; two sisters, Marilyn (Warren) Reed and Refa M. Mohr, all of Convoy; four grandchildren Scott Ryan, Patrick Ryan, Jennifer Hutson, and Chris Van Hoozer; and three great grandchildren, Tyler Ryan, Hunter Ryan and Wade Hutson. Louis was a 1st Sergeant in the US Army leading a company of Combat Engineers in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He retired from Continental Can Co. in Van Wert with 40 years of service and he also farmed. He was a member of the former Mentzer, then Countryside Chapel United Methodist Church, rural Convoy where he taught Sunday School until he was 97. He was a member of the Van Wert County Horseshoe Club and pitched in many tournaments at the Van Wert County Fair. Louis enjoyed gardening, had a great sense of humor and was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Countryside United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Kargas officiating. Interment will follow at Convoy I.O.O.F. Cemetery where military rites will be held by the combined honor guard of the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours are Friday 3 - 7 p.m., at the Cowan & Son Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the Church. Preferred memorials are to the Countryside Chapel United Methodist Church or the CHP Inpatient Hospice Center.
