George A. Palombi, 83, passed away at 9:30 a.m., Friday at his residence in Van Wert. He was born on November 11, 1934, in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Sante and Pasqualina (DeAngelis) Palombi. On April 4, 1959, he married the former Sandra M. Ciccone who survives. Other family members include his three children, John (Nancy) Palombi of Prattville, Alabama, Sandra (Chuck) Thompson of Pamona, California, and George M. Palombi of Van Wert; five grandchildren, Celeste and David Thompson, Daniel, Gregory and Jared Palombi; and a brother, Anthony Palombi of West Middlesex, Pennsylvania. Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by a brother, John. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert. George retired after a 45-year career in the steel industry with the structural steel engineering department of Republic Steel, Stran and Varco Pruden. He was a member of American Legion Post #178, the National Rifle Association, Elks Lodge #1197, and founding member of the Van Wert Centurions Club. George had many hobbies over the years. He was a firearms enthusiast. He also enjoyed reading , golf. and was a was a die-hard fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates & 6 Time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with Father Stan Szybka officiating. There will be military rites conducted by the combined honor guard of the American Legion and V.F. W. Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours will be 3 - 8 p.m., Tuesday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at a later date at St. Marys Cemetery in Hermitage, Pennsylvania. Preferred memorials are to Van Wert American Legion or James Cancer Clinic at Ohio State University.
