Obituary

Ellis V. Hunter, 98 of Van Wert, died at 1:30 a.m., Monday, April 17, 2017 at the C.H.P.-Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert, Ohio He was born on March 25, 1919 in Union Township to Walter Gale and Cora A. (Hunter) Hunter. He was raised by his Aunt Lucy Walls. He married the former Dorothy L. Starkey on October 5, 1940, and she preceded him in death after 58 years of marriage on January 22, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Olive Hurless and a brother, Ivan Hunter. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for three years. He retired from Federal Mogul after 30 years of service. He and Dorothy then spent eight winters in Sebring, Florida. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Church. Surviving is his wife, Leona (Carr) Hunter; a daughter, Sharon (Dennis) Kiess of Fort Wayne; two grandchildren, Bradley Kiess and Brenda (Peter) Hoffman, both of Fort Wayne; three great grandchildren; and a step-son, Dennis Carr of Ohio City. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 21, 2017, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home with Pastor W. Clark Williman of Calvary Evangelical Church officiating. Interment will follow at Ohio City Woodlawn Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the combined honor guard of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts of Van Wert. There will be calling hours Thursday 4 - 7 p.m. Preferred memorials are to Calvary Evangelical Church or the CHP Inpatient Hospice Center.
