Donald E. Hoover, 92, of Harrison Township, passed away at 11:21 a.m., Wednesday at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on November 25, 1924, in Harrison Township, the son of the late Russel M. and Helen (Kreischer) Hoover. On June 11, 1949, he married the former Erma Louise Dougal who survives. Other family survivors include his daughter, Beverly (Rex) Fortney; a son, Dennis (Cheryl) Hoover, all of Van Wert; five grandchildren, Heather (T.J.) Thornell, Laura (Josh) Gross, Tiffany (Chris Nowak) Hoover, Ryan (Kristy) Fortney, and Melissa (Jordan) Miller; thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Gehres of Sun City Center, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dale A. Hoover on February 10, 2017, and a brother-in-law, Floyd Gehres. Don was a 1942 graduate of Tully Convoy High School and served as a Navy Seaman First Class in World War II. He was retired farmer but still worked past his 90th birthday. He was a member of St. Pauls Reformed Church in America. He served as trustee of the Evangelical Protestant Cemetery and had been a member of the Convoy American Legion Post 208. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017, at St. Pauls Reformed Church in America with Pastor Chad Strabbing officiating. Interment will follow at Evangelical Protestant Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by combined honor guard of the American Legion and the Veteran of Foreign Wars. Calling hours are 3 - 7 p.m., Friday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. Preferred memorials are to St. Pauls Church or the Wren Fire & EMS.
