Deo C. Haines, 93, of rural Van Wert, died at 11:55 a.m., Thursday at Hearth & Home in Van Wert. He was born on November 22, 1922, in Convoy, the son of the late Richard Thurman and Lucille (Coffelt) Haines. On December 3, 1960, he married the former Marilyn M. Switzer who preceded him in death on October 18, 2010. Deo was a 1941 graduate of Van Wert and a member of Trinity Friends Church. He served as a gunner for the 389th Field Artillery Battalion of the U.S. Army in World War II. He worked as the Tool Room Foreman at National Seal for over 40 years. He was an avid golfer and gardener. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a special way of making people smile with his kind words, funny jokes, and quick-witted humor. Family survivors include his daughter, Susan E. (Jon) Gnagy of North Manchester, Indiana; a son, Kenneth R. (Marie) Haines of Justin, Texas; four grandchildren, Tonia Gentolizo, Amy Wright, Andrew Gnagy and Tara Gnagy; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Deo was preceded in death by seven brothers, Harold A. Haines, Robert A. Haines, Sr., Richard E. Haines, Louis E. Haines, Bernard C. Haines, Walter D. Haines and Leo M. Hanies. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, with Pastor Steve Savage officiating. Interment will follow at Ohio City Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 - 7 p.m., Monday. Preferred memorials are to the Trinity Friends Church Building Fund.
