Obituary

Dean L. Black, of Broomfield, CO., died at 09:30 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2015 at home, surrounded by his family, after a lengthy struggle with various multiple types of cancer. He was born 02 May 1933 to Don S and Gertrude Mae (Tomlinson) Black at Pleasant Township, Van Wert County, OH. His mother died 01 November 1936 at Mayo Clinic, Minneapolis, MN, his father died 28 February 1982 at Van Wert, OH. His step-mother, Cleo (Gilroy) Musser Black, brother Frederick H. Black and sister Charlotte E. (Black) Morgan also preceded him in death. On 08 April 1956, he married Diane E. Nichols, daughter of James J and Irene A. Nichols at Zion Presbyterian Church, York Township, Van Wert County, OH. Mr. Black is survived by his wife of 59 years, Diane, sons Eric (Kim), Kevin (Judy), granddaughters Cassidy (Steven) Blevins, Chelsea Black, Grandson Shane Black, sister-in-law, Jeanette (Hoersten) Black of Payne, OH, brother-in-law (Gordon) Morgan of Convoy, OH, sister-in-law Jean (Larry) Now of Montezuma, Ohio, nieces Susan Black and Julie Stuart (Ed) of Payne, Ohio, Laura Cox (Steve) of Marysville, OH and nephew Jeff Black (Kris) of Fort Wayne, IN. Mr. Black was employed at the IBM Boulder facility at Boulder, Colorado from July 1966 to July 1978 and at the IBM Tucson facility from July 1978 to his retirement in April 1993. He was a retired MVS Systems Programmer and was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. He was employed at Colorado Springs Utilities as a Systems Programmer from May 1995 to September 1996. He was an avid lifelong sports fan with basketball being his favorite, his favorite basketball teams were the Boston Celtics and the U. of Arizona. He especially enjoyed being with family and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed using his home computers, solving crossword puzzles and working on home improvement projects. He was involved in genealogy research and was a member of Auglaize, Champaign, Mercer and Van Wert, OH, county genealogical societies. He was a member of First Families and Pioneer Families of the Van Wert Co. Ohio Genealogical Society. He was a member of Presbyterian churches in Arizona and Colorado and served on church committees. Viewing will be at Cowan & Son Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015. Graveside service will be at Tomlinson Cemetery, Mercer County, OH, 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2015, with Rev. Thomas Emery officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
