Obituary

Alfred W. Schell, 95 of Convoy, died peacefully at 3:02 p.m., Friday June 24, 2016, at the C.H.P.-Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert, Ohio. He was born on November 22, 1920 in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Ralph Emerson and Olivia C. (Kelly) Schell. On December 30, 1948, he married Genevieve Louise (Klein), who survives at the residence. Family survivors include his wife of 67 years, Genevieve; son, Kevin Schell of Convoy; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy (Steve) Gamble of Rockford, Ohio; three grandsons, Michael (Megan) Gamble of Webster, New York, Trent (Betsey) Gamble of Berne, Indiana, and Troy (Brittany) Gamble of Rockford; six great grandchildren, Colton, Jace, & Ty Gamble of Berne, Indiana and Mason Gavin, & Braelyn Lawyer of Webster, New York; sister-in-law, Mary Schell of Burton, Michigan; niece, Valerie (Roger) Kohn of Houghton Lake, Michigan; nephew, Mike (Cathy) Schell of Burton, Michigan; and many loving cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph William Schell. Alfred graduated from Logansport High School in Logansport, Indiana and Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a pilot in WWII serving in the Army Air Corp from March 1942 to October 1945. He attained the rank of Captain and trained bombardier cadets. He retired July 1, 1981 as a civil engineer with the Ohio Department of Transportation. He was a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church in America, a former deacon, choir member and served on the church council. He also did volunteer work for the Crestview Schools. He was a life member of B.P.O Elks Lodge #1197, Van Wert; member the American Legion Post #208, Convoy; and member of the Convoy Fox Hunters. He enjoyed gardening, mushroom hunting, bowling, fishing, playing cards, bingo, and being with Family. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, June 29, 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Reformed Church of America, Harrison Township, officiated by Rev. Chad Strabbing. Visitation is one hour ahead of the service on Wednesday and Tuesday June 28, 4-8 p.m. at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, Ohio. Interment is at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Convoy, Ohio, with military honors by the American Legion. Preferred memorials are for the Convoy E.M.S., Council on Aging, St. Paul's RCA, & C.H.P.- Inpatient Hospice Center.
