Catherine Marguerite "Marge" (Fleming) Akerman, 97, a resident of The Laurels of Shane Hill, Rockford, departed this world to be with the Lord at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2013
She was born June 21, 1916, in Jackson Township, Allen County, Ohio to Frank and Cathern (Ream) Fleming. She graduate from Lafayette High School in 1934 as valedictorian of her class. Marge faithfully served St. John's Lutheran Church in Ohio City, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. She had worked at Federal Mogul and Van Wert Manufacturing. Marge also had a green thumb for growing plants and flowers and loved watching the birds. She could tell the weather by way the birds were flying.
On January 15, 1937, Marge married David W. Akerman. Her husband preceded her in death in May of 1967. She was also preceded in death by daughter, Karen Christian; a son, Rev. H. Eldon "Cliff" Akerman; a son-in-law, Joe May; and several brothers and sisters.
Marge is survived by her daughter, Lovest Sue May, Celina, Ohio; her sons, David (Diane) Akerman, Phillip (Melody) Akerman of Van Wert, Irvin Michael "Mike" (Shelly) Akerman of Gray, Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Akerman of Houston, Texas; 22 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; and a host of loving and caring nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday with a memorial service following conducted by Pastor Denise Brown, all at the Cowan & Son Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church of Ohio City or the Ohio City Fire Dept. Or if you would rather plant a flower, or feed some birds, Marge would love that just as well.
